Week 2

Tuesday 13 & Thursday 15

We had such a good week at school, the kids are starting to anticipate what is going to happen next and are more comfortable and willing to answer questions.

Tuesday: Today we read the book Rainbow Fish, our activities centered around fish, the color blue, and introducing squares.

We started off with play dough until all the kids arrived. The morning calendar routine is going great.  We practiced counting 1-5 with some numbered fish.  I gave each child three different sized blue paper squares.  We practiced sorting them from big to little and reverse.  I gave them different instructions like, "tickle the small square" or "Karate Chop the medium square".  We all had fun with that activity.  After that I hid all the blue squares around the room and they had to find them and sort them into big, medium, small. We read the Rainbow Fish and talked about sharing.  For Snack I gave half the kids pretzels and half Cheezits.  They shared with each other to have a bit of both.  The kids all love dancing, for one of the songs we go to different parts of the room, below is a picture of all the kids racing to a star on the wall.  I also introduced our question of the day.  That is the green and blue pocket chart with the YES/NO written above them.  Today I asked them if they like ice cream.  They have to find their name and put it in the right pocket. We will talk a little about graphing, opinions, and counting with this exercise through the year.  We did a worksheet and a Rainbow fish craft to end the day!

Thursday:  Today we read books about being a good friend  Chrysanthemum and A Sick Day for Amos McGee.  We also continued talking about squares and the color blue.

We started by making volcanos with baking soda and vinegar. The kids used droppers to transfer the liquid.  This is good fine motor practice and helps them build strength to hold a pencil correctly.  We did our morning calendar time and then had a visit from a yellow and a blue butterfly who sang about being a good friend and asking nicely to join in playing.  You can see in the picture below everyone is sitting criss cross applesauce for circle time and lesson--we have been practicing! We had peanut butter sandwiches and cheezits for snack. We also played a counting game with duplos.  Everyone got a stack of five blocks and we practiced making different number combinations.  We made a stack of three which left two behind.  I had them hold up each stack and then put them back together to make five.  This is an early introduction to addition.  We made all the possible combinations and then the children took turns calling out the numbers.  We made a giant tower at the end. We did our music time and then we made our butterflies and had a butterfly parade to a new song.  After that we worked on our square review worksheet and got ready to go home.  Everyone is doing a great job!
