Tuesday: Today was all about the brain! Our first experiment was putting an egg in a tupperware and shaking it. The egg cracked, so we decided to add some water and then try again. The water in the tupperware kept the egg from cracking! I explained that this is just like our brains. We have fluid around our brains to keep it from getting hurt, we also have hard skulls to keep our brain safe. I also brought out a helmet and asked them what is was for. The kids all talked about why we should wear a helmet for sports. Next we played with easter eggs and play dough. We talked about how the skull is hard and protects our soft brains. The kids did their name puzzles. Everyone was able to complete it without using a name template! No one could do that the first several weeks of preschool! Last we talked about how our brains make us unique. I had everyone do a still life of some flowers and we noticed that no two pictures looked a like! Everyone has their own creative, important brain!
Thursday: Our gathering activity was blocks. We had a letter assessment today to see how well they could recognize the letters we have learned so far. We will do part two of the assessment next week. Next we did an experiment about our digestive system. We talked about how food goes down our throat into our stomach. Each kid added some food to a baggie and then we added water and vinegar as the stomach acid. We watched as the food started to dissolve and break apart. We took turns squishing it around until it was all liquid. We colored a picture of the stomach drawing our favorite foods inside. We then stretched out party paper to about ten feet per child and added that as the intestines. The kids loved talking about how food goes through the intestines and turns into poop. A legitimate reason to discuss poop was perfect for all these boys.
